Building Community-Supported Housing

Since 2009, Epicenter has paired local knowledge with design expertise to expand options in under-resourced places usually neglected by design professionals, such as their home in Green River, Utah (pop. 847). With each project the company aims to uplift the can-do culture and community-reliant ethic that is so often found in small towns like Green River. Their applied research in rural affordable housing development has consisted of a series of projects with the hope that any housing built was specifically designed to last in their community. While the path to becoming an affordable housing developer has been locally-specific and nonlinear, there are five main things that could be replicated by small groups in other rural towns to begin addressing the widespread housing crises.

  1. I. Study The Local Situation
  2. II. Address Most Urgent Needs
  3. III. Test Ideas For Large Projects
  4. IV. Engage Local Residents in Project Planning
  5. V. Execute Large Project
  6. Conclusion
  7. References
